Autumn colours on wooded hillsides in the Bulgarian mountains

When to go, and when not to

Bulgaria has three seasons that matter to visitors: a short summer on the coast, a short summer in the high mountains, and a winter ski season. Between them sit the city months of spring and autumn. Here is how the country's climate works, what each month suits, and the times to stay away.

How the climate works

Most of Bulgaria has a humid continental climate: cold winters and warm to hot summers. The highest mountains have an alpine climate, and the far south, in the lowest valleys of the Maritsa and the south Black Sea coast, has a strong Mediterranean influence. Average annual precipitation is about 670 mm, less in the lowlands and more in the mountains; the north-eastern Dobrudzha is the driest region.

Temperatures swing widely. On the Danubian Plain the mean is about −1 °C in January and 24 °C in July. Sofia has a humid continental climate too. In the Western Rhodopes, winters regularly reach −15 °C; in Pamporovo, the average January temperature is −3 °C.

Season by season

Winter: December to March

The ski season. Bansko's 2025/26 season opened officially on 13 December 2025. A 2026 travel article suggests January and February as the ideal skiing months, and spring skiing after about 5 March for fewer crowds. Winters are cold in the cities as well as the mountains.

Spring: April to June

Good months for Sofia, Plovdiv and the lowlands. The Rose Valley around Kazanlak blooms in May and June; the bloom historically started between 10 and 20 June, but in 2024 it came nearly a month early. The coast season gets under way from May. The Seven Rila Lakes usually stay frozen until June.

Summer: July and August

Peak season on the coast and in the high mountains. July and August are the usual months for the Seven Rila Lakes, and the Borovets gondola towards Musala normally runs from July to September. Expect queues at the Rila Lakes chairlift at weekends and crowds in Nesebar and the big resorts. Bansko hosts its jazz festival; in 2026 it ran from 31 July to 9 August.

Autumn: September to November

September keeps the coast warm but calmer, with Sozopol's Apollonia arts festival and Night/Plovdiv. In the high mountains, the lakes usually freeze again in October. Bansko's gondola ran a summer schedule into November in 2026, and ski passes for the coming season went on early sale from 1 October.

Weather risks to plan around

In the mountains, lifts stop in strong wind and thunderstorms, and weather above the tree line can turn quickly; the UK Foreign Office warns of avalanche risk in winter. On the coast, obey flags and lifeguards. In the cities, the risk is more often crowds than weather: plan the busiest sights for early in the day in summer.

If you can only choose one month

  • June: cities, the Rose Valley at the end of its season, and the start of the coast season; high lakes may still hold ice.
  • Early September: the coast past its peak, Apollonia in Sozopol, Night/Plovdiv, and the high mountains still open before the October freeze.
  • February: skiing, if you can live with queues in Bansko, or choose Borovets or Pamporovo.
