A chain of glacial lakes below rocky ridges in the Rila mountains in summer

Mountains and skiing

Most of Bulgaria is low, but its south-west is not: Rila and Pirin rise above 2,500 m, with glacial lakes, a famous monastery and the country's main ski areas. To the south-east, the Rhodopes are lower, wider and forested. This section covers all three ranges and the resorts built into them.

Three ranges, three characters

RilaNorth of Pirin, across the Predel saddle; Rila Monastery at 1,147 m; Seven Rila Lakes at 2,100–2,500 m; Borovets ski resort
PirinNational park of 403.56 km², UNESCO-listed since 1983; Vihren 2,914 m; 118 glacial lakes; Bansko at its foot
RhodopesLargest range by area; Golyam Perelik 2,191 m; karst gorges such as Trigrad; Pamporovo resort

Rila and Pirin are alpine in their upper parts: bare ridges, cirques and lakes, with snow lying late. The Rhodopes are a broad system of ridges and deep valleys, with large conifer forests, caves and gorges. The practical difference for a visitor is season and access. Rila's high lakes are usually frozen from October until June. The Rhodopes are lower, with a milder climate, and are reached from Plovdiv rather than Sofia.

Safety and insurance in the mountains

The UK Foreign Office advises that insurance for skiing, mountaineering and similar activities should include mountain rescue, helicopter costs and repatriation. It warns of avalanche risk off-piste and advises skiing off-piste only with a guide, after checking local snow and weather conditions. The Bulgarian Mountain Rescue service publishes safety rules for the slopes, in Bulgarian.

In an emergency, the number is 112. Bansko's official ski site lists 112 for police, ambulance and mountain rescue. Lifts on the high ranges stop in strong wind and thunderstorms, which matters if you rely on a chairlift to get back down.

Choosing between the ranges

  • A day from Sofia: Rila Monastery, 117 km south, or Borovets, about 70 km away. Both work as a day trip, though the monastery valley rewards an overnight stay.
  • High lakes and peaks in summer: the Seven Rila Lakes or the lakes below Vihren in Pirin. Both depend on lifts and good weather, and both are crowded at weekends in July and August.
  • Skiing: Bansko has the largest area but busy gondola queues; Borovets is closest to Sofia; Pamporovo is gentler and lies south of Plovdiv.
  • Quieter walking: the Rhodopes, with forests, gorges and mineral-spring towns such as Velingrad and Devin.

What this section does not do

We do not sell guided hikes, ski packages or lift passes, and we do not name guides or schools. Lift hours and prices are the operators' to set; we quote them with a date and a source, and you should confirm them before you travel. Where we could not read an operator's page, as with the Seven Rila Lakes chairlift in October 2026, the page says so.
