Ski resorts: Bansko, Borovets, Pamporovo

Bulgaria's three main ski resorts sit in three different ranges and suit three different kinds of skier. This page compares their pistes, altitude and access, gives the season and lift times the operators publish, and explains why the price gap with the Alps is narrowing.

Bansko

Bansko is a historic town at 925 m below the Pirin mountains rather than a purpose-built resort, which is part of its appeal. A gondola built in 2003 runs from the town to Banderishka Poliana, the main base of the ski area, which has about 75 km of runs. The ski area's official site lists gondola hours of 08:30–17:00 and ski lifts from 08:45 to 16:15. The 2025/26 season officially opened on 13 December 2025.

The weakness is the single gondola from town. A 2026 travel article reports morning queues of 30 to 50 minutes between Christmas and early March, and notes that expansion is blocked because the ski area lies within Pirin National Park. Its advice: be at the gondola before it opens, buy the pass the day before, or reach the mid-station at Banderishka Polyana by road.

For 2026/27, the operator sold season and year-round passes at promotional prices from 1 October to 1 December 2026. In summer Bansko hosts the Bansko Jazz Fest; in 2026 two lifts ran during the festival, from 31 July to 9 August.

Borovets

Borovets, on the northern slopes of Rila near Samokov, is the oldest winter resort in Bulgaria, dating from 1896, when it began as a royal hunting retreat. It has hosted Alpine Skiing World Cup rounds and the 1993 Biathlon World Championships. At about 70 km from Sofia it is the easiest resort to reach from the capital.

The resort lies at 1,350 m, with 58 km of marked pistes reaching 2,560 m, mostly on north-facing slopes. A six-seat gondola climbs to Yastrebets at 2,363 m in about 20 minutes. In summer, the same gondola is the usual start for a day ascent of Musala; a 2023 guide said it normally runs from July to September.

Pamporovo

Pamporovo, in Smolyan Province in the southern Rhodopes, sits at 1,620 m among spruce forest below Snezhanka peak (1,928 m). It is about 85 km south of Plovdiv. The resort is described as family-friendly and suited to complete beginners and intermediates, and winters there are only moderately cold, with an average January temperature of −3 °C.

Its top station is far lower than in Bansko or Borovets, and a 2026 travel article describes gentle, sunny slopes that suit beginners and a quieter evening atmosphere. A local microclimate helps snow lie for a long time, according to reference sources, but conditions vary year to year. Being south of Plovdiv, it combines well with a stay in that city.

Season and timing

Season dates are set each year by the operators. Bansko's 2025/26 season opened officially on 13 December 2025. A 2026 travel article suggests January and February as the ideal time, and spring skiing after about 5 March to avoid the biggest crowds and save money. The same article reports morning gondola queues in Bansko between Christmas and early March.

Our reading of the sources: 3 = main season; 2 = spring skiing, conditions vary; 1 = no skiing. Opening and closing dates are set each year by the operators.

Opening dates for 2026/27 at Borovets and Pamporovo were not yet published in a source we could read on 28 October 2026.

Lift passes and the cost question

Bulgarian resorts are cheaper than the big Alpine ones on most measures, but the gap is closing. A 2026 travel article, citing an annual UK cost comparison, reports that the six-day pass in Bansko rose by 154% over ten years, the steepest increase among the resorts tracked, and that Bansko and Borovets prices rose by more than 23% and almost 19% respectively in 2025/26. The same article gives a children's day pass in Bansko of EUR 30.

The real savings, the article argues, are in ski school and equipment rather than lift passes, and flights and transfers can cancel them out for travellers who could drive to the Alps. For travellers from further away, who must fly anyway, the sums look different.

Safety on and off the piste

  • The UK Foreign Office warns of avalanche risk and advises skiing off-piste only with a guide after checking local snow and weather.
  • Insurance should cover mountain rescue, helicopter costs and repatriation.
  • The Bulgarian Mountain Rescue service publishes rules for the slopes, in Bulgarian.
  • In an emergency call 112; Bansko's official site lists 112 for police, ambulance and mountain rescue.
  • The Foreign Office also warns of overcharging in so-called gentlemen's clubs in resorts including Bansko and Borovets.

Which resort for whom

  • Bansko: confident skiers who want the largest area and a town with life in the evenings, and who accept queues.
  • Borovets: skiers short of time, or flying into Sofia, who want to be on the snow the same day.
  • Pamporovo: beginners and families, and anyone combining skiing with Plovdiv.
