Rila Monastery and the Seven Lakes
Two of the most visited places in the Bulgarian mountains lie a short distance apart in north-west Rila: the monastery of St Ivan of Rila in its deep valley, and the chain of glacial lakes above Panichishte. The first can be visited all year. The second is reliably open to walkers for only a few weeks each summer.
Rila Monastery in brief
Rila Monastery is an Eastern Orthodox monastery and an important place of pilgrimage. It sits inside Rila Monastery Nature Park, close to the Rila Monastery Forest Nature Reserve. Its high stone outer walls and small windows make it look more like a fortress than a religious house, and during the centuries of foreign rule it served as a store of Bulgarian language and culture.

A thousand years in one valley
Tradition holds that the monastery was founded during the rule of Tsar Peter I by the followers of Ivan of Rila, a hermit who lived in a cave nearby. The oldest surviving building is the Tower of Hrelyo, of 1334–1335, and in 1469 the relics of St Ivan were brought back from Tarnovo.
During the Bulgarian National Revival the monastery became a centre of learning; Neofit Rilski founded a school there. A fire in 1833 destroyed most of the complex, which was rebuilt between 1834 and 1862 with donations from across the country, under the architect Alexi Rilets. Revolutionaries including Vasil Levski used it as a hiding place.

What to see inside
- The main church, built 1834–1837 by Pavel Ioanov, with a carved iconostasis that took four craftsmen five years.
- The frescoes, finished in 1846 by painters from Bansko, Samokov and Razlog, among them Zahari Zograf.
- The Tower of Hrelyo, the oldest building, with a belfry added in 1844.
- The residential wings, with 300 chambers, chapels, a kitchen known for its huge vessels and a library of 250 manuscripts and 9,000 old printed items.
- The museum, home to Rafail's Cross, a wooden cross carved with 104 scenes and 650 tiny figures, finished in 1802 after at least twelve years' work.
The complex covers 8,800 m² around an inner courtyard of 3,200 m². The striped arcades of the courtyard are one of its most photographed features. Opening hours and any charges for the museum are set by the monastery; we could not confirm them from an official source on 28 October 2026, so check locally.

Visiting the monastery
Most visitors come from Sofia, 117 km to the north. It is a working monastery and a pilgrimage site, and it drew 900,000 visitors in 2008 alone, so expect company. Dress modestly, as you would for any working church. At 1,147 m in a deep valley it can be cool, so bring a layer outside high summer.
A day trip is enough to see the buildings. Staying nearby in the valley gives you the courtyard in the quieter early and late hours, and time to walk in the nature park. Public transport from Sofia exists but takes planning; check current timetables before you set out.

The Seven Rila Lakes
The Seven Rila Lakes are glacial lakes, or tarns, set in cirques in north-western Rila between 2,100 and 2,500 m. They are the most visited group of lakes in Bulgaria. They lie one above the other, linked by streams and small waterfalls, and each has a name drawn from its character.

When the lakes are open to walkers
The lakes usually freeze in October and do not melt before June. July and August are the usual months to visit. For the rest of the year the weather can be severe. A trip planned for May will usually find snow and ice, not lakes.
Our reading: 3 = usual visiting months; 2 = possible, with snow, ice or early storms; 1 = frozen or severe weather.

The chairlift from Pionerska hut
Most walkers reach the lakes by the chairlift above Panichishte. It runs from Pionerska hut at 1,520 m to the Rila Lakes hut at 2,150 m. A paved road leads from Panichishte to the lower station, where there is a paid car park. A 2023 hiking guide reported summer hours of roughly 08:00 or 08:30 to 18:00 or 19:00, a late start at 12:00 on Mondays for technical checks, and big queues at weekends in July and August.
The lift stops in strong wind and thunderstorms. The operator's own hours page could not be read on 28 October 2026, so the times above are from a 2023 guide and may have changed. Confirm hours and fares with the operator, and be at the lift before it opens in high season.

Who should think twice
- Visitors outside July and August expecting open water and an easy walk.
- Anyone without warm, waterproof layers: the lakes are at 2,100–2,500 m and storms build fast.
- Walkers relying on the chairlift to come down late in the day: check the last ride.
- Visitors to the monastery hoping for solitude at midday in summer.
Mountain rescue and helicopter costs should be in your insurance, the UK Foreign Office advises. The emergency number is 112.
